Even before they took place, the 2005 Kansas school board hearings on evolution were recognized as a pivotal battle in America’s ongoing war over teaching evolution in the public schools. Organized by believers in Intelligent Design and convened by creationists, the hearings provided a testing ground for the successful legal and political tactics that drive today’s ongoing actions by anti-evolution organizations in the US and around the world. On the pro-evolution side, they inspired a worldwide boycott of the event by mainstream science.

Kansas vs. Darwin reveals the fascinating and sometimes baffling personalities behind the spectacle, with exclusive footage of the hearings and revealing, in-depth interviews with the major figures on both sides. Never revealing their own opinions, the filmmakers allow the characters to fight it out, with emotionally polarizing and often humorous results. The witnesses at the hearings include anti-evolution scientists, educators, and even a middle-eastern journalist. Their opinions are refuted in interviews with their pro-evolution counterparts.

More than a political documentary, Kansas vs. Darwin takes you to the dark heart of the culture wars, examining the confusing crossroads of politics, religion, science and education. The film is delineated by chapters that guide the exploration of its various themes, including the meaning of evolution as it affects man’s sense of purpose, the definition of science, materialism vs. spirituality, and the responsibility of educators regarding the religious beliefs of their students.

Daniel Tosh hilarious recounts the full plot of the supremely gross, transgressive horror film, The Human Centipede:

A few days after I successfully defended my dissertation last year, one of my best friends and I went out for a celebratory dinner and afterwards decided to see a movie on the spur of the moment. We went down to the artsy Independent Film Channel theater in the Village and saw what they were showing. We noticed that there was going to be a special showing of The Human Centipede after which the cast would director would come out and talk to the audience. From the poster and the title I (inaccurately) guessed this would be a movie like one of my all time favorites, The Fly and I thought it would be fun to see a film followed by the chance to see the filmmakers live.

It wasn’t like The Fly. It was, instead, unbelievably gross and horrific, laughably campy, and at times a good thriller. I don’t know that I would say I liked it, but I will surely always remember it and always joke about it with my friend. I could not evaluate it in traditional terms and so I completely approved of Roger Ebert’s choice when it came time for him to rate the film:

I am required to award stars to movies I review. This time, I refuse to do it. The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? It is what it is and occupies a world where the stars don’t shine.

The cast was really, really nice and approachable afterwards.

But, if you are going to hate on the prequels, you cannot do a much more thorough, defensible, or hilarious job than Red Letter Media’s take downs of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

Now comes his long awaited long, long take on Revenge of the Sith. Enjoy haters, don’t say I never let those who disagree with me have their full say:
