It’s odd that instead of insisting that racism is good, they have internalized the notion it’s bad and being unable to admit what they’re doing is bad, they have to say that it’s not what they’re doing.

The same bizarreness is happening with homophobia. In the ’90s the right outright refused the term was descriptive of anything at all and not just a political invention for tarring those who opposed homosexuality. But in this decade I’ve started to hear right wing homophobes actually (pathetically) insist they’re not homophobic but no longer in a way that denies the existence of homophobia. It’s become just like racism. And that’s a cognitive dissonance that the majority will see through in no time with homophobia as it already does with racism.

You may not have experienced this in Poland (or maybe you did) but during the 2008 campaign I cannot tell you how many racists would take the tack of not directly opposing Obama but talking about how “concerned they were someone would assassinate him.” It was the creepiest, most Freudian sublimation in the world. They knew they couldn’t come right out and express their reactionary racist hatred, so it came out as a “concern” for this violent possibility. And THAT was a reason to oppose his continuing his run. You know, for his own good.
